- A Dutch film-maker was murdered by a Muslim for far less than making
a film saying that “Dutch people needed to be protected from the essential
filth of Muslims”.
Van Goghʼs murder was apparently sparked by a documentary he
made earlier this year with Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali-born woman
politician who calls herself ʻan ex-Muslimʼ. The provocative film,
broadcast on national television, featured quotes from the Koran, which
Muslims believe is the word of God, projected on to a naked female body
with a commentary composed of the testimonies of abused Muslim
women. “The murder that shattered Hollandʼs liberal dream”, The

See Peter McLoughlin, Easy Meat (pp.195-199) for an account of the
British government’s attempts to pass a blasphemy law that would target
those who said something which offended any Muslim. At one stage it
was intended that this law should carry a penalty of up to seven years’
imprisonment. ↵
