Joe Root has thrown his full support
behind Chris Silverwood, indicating
that he would like England’s head
coach to remain in his job beyond the
Ashes.
After a shambolic tour, it is incon-
ceivable that there will be no changes in
the weeks to come and Silverwood is in
the most vulnerable position, with the
next Test tour to the Caribbean begin-
ning in early March.
Silverwood missed the Sydney Test
with Covid, during which his assistant,
Graham Thorpe, took charge, but is
back in good health for the final Test, in
Hobart, starting tomorrow.

been averted, but Tom Harrison, the
chief executive, and Ashley Giles, the
managing director, are in Hobart and

The referee who caused chaos in an
Africa Cup of Nations match by twice
blowing his whistle early for the end of
the game had previously been suspend-
ed as part of a corruption investigation
before being cleared because of insuffi-

Janny Sikazwe, from Zambia, first
blew for full-time after only 85 minutes
of the group F opener between Tunisia
and Mali, but then restarted the match
— only to end it 17 seconds before the
90 minutes were up and without play-
ing any added time, despite a second
half featuring two penalties (including
one awarded after a VAR check), a red
card and five breaks for substitutions.
The incident has caused huge embar-
rassment for the Confederation of Afri-
can Football (CAF), and at one point, it

Antonio Conte defended his
decision to switch goalkeepers for
Tottenham Hotspur’s Carabao
Cup semi-final second leg against
Chelsea after a Pierluigi Gollini
error sealed their fate.
The Tottenham head coach
replaced Hugo Lloris, the club
captain, with his Italian deputy
Gollini who was at fault
when Antonio Rüdiger
headed in Mason Mount’s
18th-minute corner.
Lloris began the first leg
at Stamford Bridge last
week, which Conte’s team
lost 2-0, but watched on
from the substitutes’ bench
and the Italian stood by his
