51 In the ‘Curriculum vitae’ in Geoff rey Bennington’s book, the episode
is related in the following terms: ‘[A]fter 1980, and although he had
been urged to defend his thesis to be a candidate for a chair, succeeding
Paul Ricoeur, this post is immediately suppressed by A. Saulnier-Seité,
then minister of education, and when another post is given in replace-
ment and on certain conditions, the university colleagues who had
“invited” J.D. to apply, and those of the national body, vote against
him’ (p. 331). This passage, like many others in the ‘Curriculum vitae’,
was obviously written by Derrida himself.
