then you shall besiege it. When the
LO RD your God giv es it in to you r
hand, you shall strike all themen init
with the edge of the sword. Only the
women and the children andthe ani-
malsand all that is in the city, all its
spoil, you shall take as booty for your-
se lf: and you sha ll use th e spo il of
your enemies which the LORD your
God has given you. Only in the cities
of these peoples that the LORD your
God is giving you as an inheritance,
you shall not leave alive anything that
breathes" (Deuteronomy 20:10-17).
"Now theref ore, kill every male among the little ones, and
kill ever y woman who has known a man inti matel y. But all
the girls who have not known a man intimately, spare for
yourselves" (Numbers 3117 -18).
Strong stuff, right? Just as badas"slay the unbelievers wherever you
find them" (Qur'an9:5)and "Therefore, when ye meet the unbelievers in
fight, smite at their necks; at length, when ye have thorou ghly subdue d
them, bind a bond firmly on them" (Qur'an47:4)and all the rest, right?
Wrong. Unless you happen to be a Hittite, Girgashite, Amorite, Canaan-
ite, Perizzi te, Hivite, or Jebusit e, these Biblic al passag es simply do not
apply to you. The Qur'an exhorts believers to fight unbelievers without
spec ifyi ng anywhere inthetext that only certa in unbel ieve rsare tobe
fought, or only for acertain period oftime, or someother distinction. Tak-
ing the texts at face value, the command to make war against unbelievers
