The 4thof June 1989
What all I did
I’m not entirely sure now
It seems I was on a train
A train
Travelling from Shenzhen to Nanchang
I remember in the sleeper car
There were mostly middle-aged and
older people
Everybody a stranger to the other
But I had two companions
One my 18-year old girlfriend
The other a
Cadre in the organization department of
a provincial Communist Youth League
For some reason
We’d broken off our business in
Shenzhen
Were hurriedly backtracking

The setting sun kissed the roof of the
carriage goodbye
The night grew deeper
At Zhuzhou station
As many as 10,000 passengers were
gathered
We sat on the tracks
Or wandered about not far from
the car
Some asked in the station when the
train would go
The answer was a shock:
Either return to Shenzhen
Or just wait for orders from Beijing!
The night grew grimmer
The hour hand moved toward zero hour
I returned to the carriage
Hugging my sleeping girlfriend
