120 THE LIFE OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD
"The following year 12 of the anjar kept to their appointment to attend the
festival (of the haj); they were Abn Umama As'ad b. Zurara and 'Awf b.
al-Harith, mentioned above, along with his brother Musdh, both these being
sons of 'Afra', and mfi' b. Mdik, also mentioned above.
"Then there were Dhakwm b. 'Abd Qays b. Khalada b. Mukhlid b. 'Amir, the
son of Zurayq al-Zurqi. (Ibn Hisham said that he was a Helper who had also
migrated from Mecca.)
"Also there were 'Ubada b. al-Samit b. Qays b. Asram b. Fihr b. Tha'laba b.
Ghanm b. 'Awf b. 'Amr b. 'Awf b. al-Khazraj, along with their ally Abn 'Abd
al-Rahmm Yazid b. Tha'laba b. Khazma b. A~ram al-Balawi, al-'Abbas b.
Wbada b. Nadla b. Mdik b. al-'Ajlzn b. Yazid b. Ghanm b. Salim b. 'Awf b.
'Amr b. 'Awf b. al-Khazraj al-'Ajl~ni, Wqba b. 'Amir b. Nabi, mentioned
before, and Qutba b. 'Amir b. Hadida, mentioned before.
"These men were from Khazraj.
"From Aws there were two men, Wwaym b. Sa'ida and Abn al-Haytham,
Mdik b. al-Tayhm." Ibn Hishm stated that al-Tayhzn could also be spelled
al-Tayyihan, as in the words mayt, dead, and mayyit.
Al-Suhayli stated, "The full name of Aha al-Haytham b. al-Tayhm was
Mdik b. Malik b. 'Atayk b. 'Amr b. 'Abd al-A'lam b. 'Amir b. Za'nr b. Jusham
b. al-Hsith b. al-Khazraj b. 'Amr b. Mzlik b. al-Aws." And he also stated, "It is
said that he was an Irashi or a Balawi." But neither Ibn Ishaq nor Ihn Hisha
give him such a relationship. He also said, "The word al-haytham refers to an
eaglet; it is also a type of plant."
By this he shows that these 12 men attended the festival that year with the
intent of meeting with the Messenger of God (SAAS); they did so at al-'Aqaba,
where they pledged allegiance to him with a pledge known as the "women's
pledge"; this occurred at the first (meeting) at 'Aqaba.
Abii Nu'aym related that the Messenger of God (SAAS) recited to them
God's words in ssrat Ibrrihim, "And when Abraham said, '0 my Lord, render
this country secure' @rat Ibrahim; XIV, v.35).
Ibn Ishaq stated, "Yazid b. Abn Habib related to me, from Marthad b. 'Abd
Allah al-Yazani, from 'Abd al-Ralpnan b. Wsayla al-Sun~bihi, from Wbada, he
being Ibn al-Samit, who said, 'I was among those who attended the first (meet-
ing at) 'Aqaba. We were 12 men. We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of God
(SAAS) by the so-called "women's pledge". That was before war was enjoined.
It was to the effect that we would not associate any other with God, we would
not steal, nor commit fornication, nor kill our children, nor make false accusa-
tions, nor disobey him in anything good. "If you keep to this," he told us, "you
shall go to paradise. But if you commit any of these, then God will decide your
fate; if He wishes He will either punish you or forgive you."'"
Al-Bukhm and Muslim related this hadith through al-Layth b. Sa'd, from
Yazid b. Abn Habib in much the same terms.
Ibn Ishaq stated, "Ihn Shihab al-Zuhri recounted, from 'A'idh Allah Aha
Idris al-Khawlani that Wbada b. al-S&t related to him, saying, 'We pledged to
