"While al-Bar2 was speaking to the Messenger of God (SAAS) he was inter-
rupted by Abii al-Haytham b. al-Tayyihan, who said, '0 Messenger of God, we
have certain ties to others' - meaning the Jews - 'and if we break these, we are
concerned that if God gives you victory, you might return to your own people
and abandon us.'
"The Messenger of God (SAAS) smiled at this and said, 'If your blood be
sought, our blood shall be sought, and your destruction is mine as well. I am of
you and you are of me. I will battle those you battle and make peace with those
with whom you make peace."'
Ka'b b. Milik went on, "The Messenger of God (SAAS) said, 'Bring forth
twelve from among you to be leaders to take charge of their people's affairs.'
"They selected twelve men, nine from al-Khazraj, three from Aws."

Ibn Hishzm stated, "Some scholars include among these Abii al-Haytham b.
al-Tayyihin instead of al-Rifa'a, who is above mentioned." He is also included
in the account of Yanus quoting Ibn Ishaq. And al-Suhayli and Ibn al-Athir in
his Usd al-Gh~ba Uungle Lzons) included him.
Ibn Hishb gave testimony to this in a quotation he makes from Aba Zayd
al-Ansari of poetry by Ka'b b. Malik giving reference to the twelve men selected
that night of the second meeting at alLCAqaba:
