IMAM ABU AL-FIDA' ISMA~L IBN KATHIR 169

over the route below Wsfm. He then took them along the lower parts of Amaj,
then crossed the route after passing Qudayd, then from there across al-Kharrar
and Thaniyyat al-Marra to Liqf. He guided them past the Liqf well, then down
to the Mijaj well and so to Marjah Mijaj, then down again to Marj& Dhn
alLCAdwayn and to the Dhn Kashr valley and so to al-Jadajid and al-Ajrad. Then
he took them along Dhn Salam ofthe A%%' valley, to the well at Tichin, then past
d-'Ab~bid, across al-@b, down to al-(Arj. One of their mounts was falling
behind, so a man of Aslam called Aws b. Hajr mounted the Messenger of God
(SAAS) on a camel called Ibn al-Rada' and led him into Medina; he sent with him
a youth named Masciid b. Huuayda. Then their guide from al-<Arj took them to
Thaniyya d-'.k'ir on the right side of Rakiiba; according to Ibn Hishzm this place
is known as Thaniyya al-Gh2ir. Then he took them down the Ri'm valley and so
to Quba', to the Bann 'Amr b. 'Awf. It was now Monday, the 12th of RabiC
al-Awwal and the heat was extreme, the sun almost having reached its zenith."
Abn Nu'aym mentioned, through al-Waqidi, approximately these same loca-
tions, though there is a diinepaucy in some. God knows best.
Abn Nu'aym stated that Abn Haid b. Jabala related to him that Muhammad
b. Ishaq quoted from al-Sarraj, who quoted from Muhammad b. Whnda b. Miisa
al-Ijli from his brother Mnsa b. Whada, from 'Abd Allah b. Sayyw, from Iyas
b. Malik b. d-Aws al-Aslami, who quoted his father as saying, "When the
Messenger of God (SAAS) emiqated along with Aba Bakr, they passed by a
camel of ours at al-Juhfa. The Messenger of God (SAAS) asked, 'Who owns this
camel?' 'A man from Aslam,' he was told. The Prophet (SAAS) turned to Aba
Bakr, who commented, 'May you be safe, God willing!' The Prophet (SAAS)
asked the man, 'What's your name?' 'Mascud,' he replied. The Prophet (SAAS)
again turned to Abn Bakr, who commented, 'May you be happy. God willing!'"37
The account goes on, "My father then went to him and carried him on his way
on a camel called Ibn al-Rada'."
I would comment that previously we learned from Ibn 'AbbZs that the Mes-
senger of God (SAAS) left Mecca on a Monday and entered Medina on a Monday.
It is clear that there was a period of 15 days between his departure from Mecca
and his arrival in Medina. This is because he spent three nights in the cave on
Mt. Thawr, and then took the coastal road which is further than the main route.
On his way he passed by Umm Ma'bad, daughter of Ka'b of the Banii Ka'b b.
Khuza'a.
Ibn Hisha stated, "Ynnus quoted Ibn Ishaq as saying that her name was
'Atika, daughter of Khalaf b. Ma'bad b. Rabi'a b. Asram.
"Al-Umawi, however, said that she was (Atika, daughter of Tabic, an ally of
Bann Munqidh b. Rabi'a b. Asram b. Sanbis b. Haran b. Khaysa b. Ka'b b. 'Amr.
"This woman had sons named Ma'bad, Nadra and Hunayda, all children of
Abn Ma'bad. His name was Aktham b. 'Abd al-Wzza b. Ma'bad b. Rabi'a b.
Asram b. Sanbis.

37 The passage has a pun on Aslam and 'safe', and on MasCiid and 'happy'
