184 THE LIFE OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD

Muslim related this from Abad b. Sacid.
It is established in both sahib collections, that Anas b. Malik said, "The
Messenger of God (SAAS) was brought a large platter" - in one account it was
a bowl - "containing green vegetables. He asked and was told what these were
and when he looked at them, he did not want to eat them. He commented, 'You
eat them; I have private conversations with people with whom you do not!"'
Al-Wiiqidi recounted that when the Messenger of God (SAAS) stayed at the
home of Abii Ayyiib, Ascad b. Zurzra took hold of the nose-rein of the camel of
the Messenger of God and it thus remained with hi.
It is related from Zayd b. Thabit that he said, "The first gift made to the
Messenger of God (SAAS), after he took up residence in the home of Abii
Ayyash, was brought to hi by myself. It was a big wooden bowl filled with
bread, crumbled up with yoghurt and butter. I told him that my mother had sent
the bowl. He commented, 'God bless her!' Then he called over his Companions
and they ate. Then a wooden bowl came from Sa'd b. Wbada, a mixture of bread
and meat gravy.
"Not an evening went by without there being at the door of the Messenger of
God (SAAS) three or four people who would come one after the other carrying
food. He remained there in the home of Abii Ayytib for seven months.
"While resident in the home of Abii Ayyiib, the Messenger of God (SAAS)

sent his freed-man Zayd b. Hzritha and Abii a', along with two camels and

carrying 500 dirhams, to bring back Fiicima and Umm Kulthm, daughters of
the Messenger of God (SAAS), his wife Sawda, daughter of Zam'a and Uska
b. Zayd. Ruqayya had already emigrated with her husband 'Uthmw, while
Zaynab remained with her husband, Abii al-'As b. al-Rabic in Mecca. Umm
Ayman, the wife of Zayd b. Hiwitha, came with these, and so did 'Abd All& b.
Abii Bakr with the other children of Abii Bakr who included CA'isha, 'mother of
the believers'. The Messenger of God (SAAS) had not yet consummated his
marriage with her."

Al-Bayhaqi stated, '"Ah b. Abad b. 'Abdxn informed us, quoting Ahmad b.
Wbayd al-Safftr, quoting Khalaf b. CAmr al-'Akbari, quoting Sa'id b. Mansiir,
quoting 'Inf b. Khdid, quoting Sadiq b. Mnsii, from 'Abd All& b. al-Zubayr,
that when the Messenger of God (SAAS) arrived in Medina his mount knelt
down between the homes of Jacfar b. Muhammad b. 'Ali and al-Hasan b. Zayd.
People came to him then saying, '0 Messenger of God, my house!' But his camel
got up with him again and he said, 'Let her proceed; she is being divinely guided.'
"She then moved away with him and came to the place for the rnmbar, the pul-
pit, where it knelt down and shook itself. A shed was there where they were stor-
ing and drying dates. The Messenger of God (SAAS), alighted from his mount
and went to the shade. Ahii Ayytib then approached him and said, '0 Messenger
of God, my house is the one closest to you; shall I carry your baggage to my
place?' 'Yes,' he said. So he took his baggage into the house. Another man then
