there initially. (They returned) when they heard that the polytheists had accepted
Islam and were praying. When they arrived in Mecca, Wthmm b. Mq'iin
among them, they did not find it true that the polytheists had accepted Islam, as
they had been told. Some of them then returned to Abyssinia, while others
remained in Mecca. Other Muslims also went to Abyssinia at the time of the
second migration. This will be explained hereafter.
Miisa b. Wqba stated, "Jacfar b. Abii Talib was among those who left the
second time." But Ibn Ishaq's referring to his having gone on the &st migration
is very plain, as will be shown. But God knows best.
However, he clearly was in a second group of the emigrants who went on the
first migration; he acted as their spokesman and translator before the Negus and
others. We will report this at length.
Then Ibn Ishnq went on to list those who left in the company of Ja'far, God be
pleased with them all.
They were: 'Amr b. Sa'id b. al-'As and his wife Fadma, daughter of Safwnn
b. Umayya b. Muhamth b. Shiqq al-Kinni.
And his brother Kbalid, accompanied by his wife Umayna, daughter of Khalaf
b. As'ad al-KhuBCi; she bore him Sa'id and Amma, the latter ultimately marry-
ing al-Zubayr by whom she gave birth to 'Amr and Khdid.
Also there were 'Abd Allah b. J&sh b. Ri'nb and his brother Wbayd Allah,
who was accompanied by his wife Umm Habiba, daughter of Abn Sufynn.
And Qays b. 'Abd All* of the Bann Asad b. Khazima along with his wife
Baraka, daughter of Yasa, the freed-woman of Abti Sufyzn.
And Mu'ayqib b. Abii Fahma, a freed-man of Sa'id b. &-'A$. Ibn Hishzm
stated, "He was of (the tribe of) Daws."
And Abn Mnsa al-Ash'ari, that is 'Abd Allah h. Qays, an ally of the family of
Wtba b. Rabi'a; we will discuss this later and also the authority.
And Wtba b. Ghazwm, Yazid b. Zam'a b. al-Aswad, 'Amr b. Umayya b.
al-H~rith b. Asad, Tulayb b. Wmayr b. Wahb b. Abn Kathir b. 'Abd, Suwaybit
b. Sa'd b. Huraymala and Jahm b. Qays al-'Abdawi, accompanied by his wife
Umm Harmala, daughter of 'Abd al-Aswad b. Khuzayma, along with his two
sons 'Amr b. Jahm and Khuzayma h. Jahm. Also there was Abn al-Ram b.
Wmayr b. Hshim b. 'Abd Mannf b. 'Abd al-Dw, b. al-Nadr b. al-Hwitb
b. Kalda, 'Amir b. Abn Waqqas, brother of Sa'd, and al-Mut@lib b. Azhar b.
'Abd 'Awf al-Zuhri, accompanied by his wife Ramla, daughter of Abii 'Awf b.
Dubayra, who bore in Abyssinia al-Mu~alib's son 'Abd Allzh.
Also there were 'Abd Allah b. Masciid and his brother Wtba, al-Miqdad b.
al-Aswad, al-Haith b. Khalid b. Sakhr al-Taymi, accompanied by his wife
Rayfa, daughter of al-Haith b. Jubayla; she bore him there Miisa, 'A'isha,
Zaynab and Fn~ma.
Also there were 'Amr b. Wthmnn b. 'Amr b. Ka'b b. Sa'd b. Taym b. Murra
and Shammns b. Wthman b. al-Sharid al-Makhziimi. He (Ibn Ishaq) stated that
