258 THE LIFE OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD
Im%n &mad recounted, from a hadith of Aha Ishaq, from H~tha b. Madrah,
who quoted 'Ali as saying, "The only horseman we had at Badr was al-Miqdad."
Al-Bayhaqi related, through Ihn Wahb, from Aha Sakhh, from Aha
Mucawiya al-Balkhi, from Sa'id h. Jubayr, from Ibn 'Ahba, that 'Ali told him,
"We only had two horses with us - that of al-Zuhayr and that of al-Miqdad h.
al-Aswad." He was referring to the hattle of Badr.
Al-Umawi stated, "My father related to us, quoting Isma'il h. Aha Khdid,
from al-Taymi, who said, 'At the battle of Badr the Messenger of God (SAAS)
had with him two horsemen, al-Zuhayr h. al-'Aww-am on the right flank,
al-Miqdad b. al-Aswad on the left."
Ihn Ishaq stated, "They had with them 70 camels they would ride in turn. The
Messenger of God (SAAS) shared one with 'Ali and Marthad h. Aha Marthad,
while Hamza and Zayd b. Haritha, along with Aha Kabsha and Anisa, two freed-
men of the Messenger of God (SAAS), took turns with another."
This is what Ihn Ish~q stated, may God Almighty have mercy on him.
Imm Ahad stated, "'Affm related to us, from Hammad h. Salama, 'Asim b.
Bahdala related to us, from Zirr h. Huhaysh, from 'Abd All& h. Mascad, who
said, 'At Badr we were three to a camel. Aha Luhaha and 'Ali were the
Companions of the Messenger of God (SAAS).' He also said, 'They were the ones
taking turns riding with him, and they told him, "Let us walk." He replied, "You
are no stronger than me; nor can I dispense with the reward more than you can."'"
Al-NasPi recounted this, from al-Fallas, from Ibn Mahdi, from Hammad b.
Salama.
I would comment that this might have been before Aha Luhzba was sent back
from al-Rawhi?, and that it was thereafter that he shared with 'Ali and Marthad
instead of Aba Lubaba. But God knows best.
The Imam Ahmad stated, "Muhammad h. Ja'far related to us, quoting Sa'id,
from Qatada, from Zurara h. Aha Awfa, from Sa'd h. Hisham, from 'A'isha, who
said that the Messenger of God (SAAS) ordered that the bells he cut off the
necks of the camels at the battle of Badr."
This line of transmission accords with the criteria of both sahib collections.
However, al-Nas2i recounted it from Aba al-Ashcath, from Khalid b. al-v&ith,
from Sa'id h. Abn Wroha, from Qatada.
Our teacher, the Sheikh al-Mizzi, stated in ahArraf (The Extremes): "It
was Sa'id b. Bishr who quoted directly from Qat~da. And also Hishw gave it
from Qatada, from Zurara, from Aba Hurayra." But God knows best.
Al-Bukh~ri stated that Yahya b. Bukayr related to him, quoting al-Layth,
from Wqayl, from Ihn Shihab, from 'Ahd al-Rahman h. 'Ahd Allah h. Ka'b h.
Malik, who quoted 'Ahd Allah h. Ka'b as reporting, "I heard Ka'b h. Malik say,
'The only expedition in which the Messenger of God (SAAS) participated,
that I did not attend, except for the raid on Tahak, was the hattle of Badr. And
God did not reproach anyone who stayed behind from it. Because when the
Messenger of God (SAAS) went forth on it he was heading for the Quraysb
