332 THE LIFE OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD

I comment that Jabir b. 'Abd Allsh b. 'Amr b. Hark, al-Sulami also, is
mentioned by al-Bukhzri among those at Badr. He gives a tine of authorities
from Sacid b. Manstir, from Abii Muswiya, from d-Acmash, from Abn Sufyan
quoting Jabir as saying, "I drew water from the well for my companions at the
battle of Badr."
This line of authorities is according to Muslim. However, Muhammad b. Sa'd
stated, "I mentioned this hadith to Muhammad b. 'Umar - meaning d-Waqidi

  • and he commented, 'This is ficticious and comes from the Iraqi scholars.' He
rehted J~bir's having been present at the battle of Badr."
Imam Ahmad h. Hanbal stated, "Rawh b. CIbada related to us, quoting
ZakariyyS1 b. Ishaq, quoting Aba d-Zubayr, that he heard Jabu b. 'Abd All*
say, LI went on 19 military expeditions with the Messenger of God (SAAS), but
I was not present at either Badr or Uhud. My father prevented me. After my
father was killed at Uhud, I never missed any one of the military engagements of
    the Messenger of God (SAAS)."'
Muslim related this from Abn Khaythama, from Rawh.
    Jabbiir b. Sakhr al-Sulami; Jabr b. 'Atik al-Ansai; Jubayr b. Iyy% al-Khazraji.
