notfrayed.Iftheyare,they
shouldbecutandfusedagain
tobindthem;thenuncoilthe
ropeinthedirectionofthelay
andseizetheends.Clean
awayanytarstains,andifitis
twistedorkinkedrunit
counterclockwisethrougha
blockandlayit ontheground
inlargeturnstoallowthe
strandstosettle.

Coiltherope(seepage18),
leavinganendlongenough
forthefollowingoperations:
makethreeorfourturns
aroundthecoil(1,2);folda
bightandinsertitintothetop
ofthecoil(3);openthebight
andbenditbackoverthetop
ofthecoii(4);tightenit by
pullingtheend(5).When
drawingthehitchtaut,check
thattheturnsareeven;the
ropeshouldneverbe
tightenedunevenly.
