192Whether my theory is c orrec t or not , untouc hability is repugnant to reason and
to the instinct of mercy, pity or love. A religion t hat est ablishes t he worship of t he
c ow c annot possibly c ountenanc e or warrant a c ruel and inhuman boyc ott of human
beings. And I should be c ontent to be torn to piec es rather than disown the
suppressed classes. Hindus will certainly never deserve freedom, nor get it, if they
allow t heir noble religion t o be disgrac ed by t he ret ent ion of t he t aint of
untouc hability. And as I love Hinduism dearer t han life it self, t he t aint has bec ome
for me an intolerable burden. Let us not deny God by denying to a fifth of our rac e
the right of assoc iation on an equal footing.
