2 12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brot hers and his
disciples. There they stayed for a few days.

Jesus Clears the Temple Courts

(^13) When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to
Jerusalem. 14 In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves,
and others sitting at tables exc hanging money.^15 So he made a whip out of cords,
and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins
of the money c hangers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he
said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!” 17 His
disc iples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
(^18) The Jews then responded to him, “What sign c an you show us to prove your
aut horit y t o do all t his?”
(^19) Jesus answered them, “Dest roy t his t emple, and I will raise it again in t hree
days.”
(^20) They replied, “It has taken forty-six years t o build t his t emple, and you are going
t o raise it in t hree days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body.^22 Aft er
he was raised from t he dead, his disc iples rec alled what he had said. Then they
believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.
(^23) Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the
signs he was performing and believed in his name.^24 But Jesus would not entrust
himself t o t hem, for he knew all people. 25 He did not need any testimony about
mankind, for he knew what was in eac h person.
The Authority of the Son
5 16 So, bec ause Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders
began to persecute him. 17 In his defence Jesus said to th e m, “My Father is always
at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For t his reason t hey t ried all
t he more t o kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even c alling
God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
(^19) Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son c an do nothing by
himself; he c an do only what he sees his Father doing, bec ause whatever the
Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he
does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so t hat you will be
amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the
Son gives life t o whom he is pleased t o give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no
one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,^23 that all may honour the Son just
as they honour the Father. Whoever does not honour the Son does not honour t he
Father, who sent him.
