(^54) Therefore Jesus no longer moved about public ly among the people of Judea.
Inst ead he wit hdrew t o a region near t he wilderness, t o a village c alled Ephraim,
where he st ayed wit h his disc iples.
(^55) When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, many went up from the
c ount ry t o Jerusalem for t heir c eremonial cleansing before the Passover.^56 They
kept looking for Jesus, and as they stood in the temple c ourts they asked one
another, “What do you think? Isn’t he c oming to the festival at all?”^57 But the c hief
priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus
was should report it so that they might arrest him.
Jesus Arrested
18 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disc iples and c rossed the
Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disc iples went
int o it.
(^2) Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there
wit h his disc iples. 3 So Judas c ame to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers
and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. T hey were c arrying
torc hes, lanterns and weapons.
(^4) Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them,
“Who is it you want?”
(^5) “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.
“ I a m h e , ” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with
t h e m. ) 6 When Jesus said, “ I a m h e , ” they drew bac k and fell to the ground.
(^7) Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”
“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
(^8) Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these
me n g o. ” 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I
have not lost one of those you gave me.”
(^10) Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struc k the high priest’s servant,
c utting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malc hus.)
(^11) J e s u s c o mma n d e d P et er, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the c up the
Father has given me?”
(^12) Then the detac hment of soldiers with its c ommander and the Jewish offic ials
arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the
father-in -law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who
had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the
people.
