'Marketing Madwoman', a moniker I wear with
pride.
- Technology. I began to hear about outsourcing –
paying others to do the work for you – but I wanted
to learn how to do everything myself, at least in the
beginning. Now I do a few things for myself, but the
majority of my technical tasks are performed by
others.
Being able to turn over specific tasks to others takes a level
of trust and understanding of business that I had to learn. I
used to think that I had to do it all myself, but that just isn't
true.
This came from my younger years, when I worked in
several different restaurants. From the time I was about 16
until I went to college, it was my dream to own a
restaurant. The owner of one of these restaurants, Al, took
me under his wing and taught me quite a bit about this
business. One concept Al really got across to me was that I
would need to learn how to do every job required to run the
business before I could own my own restaurant.
During the next few months I learned how to do the job I
had been hired to do – waitress – as well as how to cook,
assist the cook, bus tables, run the automatic dishwasher,
order the food, keep the books, and more. It wasn‟t until I
