material as possible. Better introductions are provided by Clauss (2000), which has an addi-
tional recent bibliography in English, and the excellent remarks of Beard et al. (1998), via
the index. Recommended too are the relevant sections of Alvar (2007). The standard corpus
of the archaeological material, by Maarten J. Vermaseren, Corpus inscriptionum et monumentorum
religionis Mithriacae(CIMRM) (1956 – 60), is, like Cumont, seriously out of date. The S. Prisca
texts, whose reading is often doubtful, were published by Vermaseren and van Essen (1965)
but can most easily be found in Betz (1968; trans. in Beard et al. 1998: 2. no. 12.5(h)). The
Tienen excavation and reports of other recent discoveries can be found in Martens and De
Boe (2004, extensive bibliography) cited above. Recent archaeological finds can be consulted
through the Archaeological Reports of the electronic Journal of Mithraic Studiesnow under
transfer to the Classics Dept., University of Canterbury at Christ Church, New Zealand
(www.clas.canterbury.ac.nz/ejms).The best astronomic/astrological account is Beck (2006).
