work is Sonetti e altre poesie (1941), followed by the novels
Tenerezza, (1946) and Le orecchie del diavolo (1954). Many
years later (1971) he published another novel, Il fiato
materno. Among his works of criticism: Sbarbaro (1943),
Renato Serra (!943), Tre poeti italiani del Novecento: Saba,
Ungaretti, Montale (1956). His Storia della letteratura
italiana del nostro secolo (3. vols.) was published in 1985. In
1993 he published Otto secoli di poesia italiana - da S.
Francesco a Pasolini, followed by Storia della letteratura
italiana del Novecento. He has also edited the Antologia
della poesia italiana contemporanea (1946) and the
Antologia della poesia italiana 1909-1949 (1950). In 1992 he
co-edited with Cesare Vivaldi the anthology Poesia dialettale
italiana - dal Rinascimento ad oggi. From 1991 he edited,
also with Vivaldi, the review of poetry and dialect studies Il
Belli, heir to the homonymous review edited by P. P. Pasolini
and the poet Mario Dell’Arco in the 50’s.
