The “Hackney boy” Jay
Blades is a popular
presenter of the hit
BBC series The Repair
Shop. However, he is
also one of more than
seven million adults in
the UK who struggle to
read. He left school
with no qualifications

through the years,
however, the film
acquires its own
horrible weight. The
testimonies become
defensive, dubious or in
one case (ex-SS Karl
Hollander) downright
unapologetic — he’s
still a Hitler fan, and
thinks that everything
would have been fine if
only the Jews had been
deported instead of

months until finally, on
the morning of his
birthday, he got the
present he always
wanted. “It was a brown
shirt and a pair of black
trousers,” he says.
Others recall summers
spent singing cheery
songs about murdering
Jews (they can still sing
them, word perfectly)
or reading aloud

As Holland moves

confronts a group of
history students in 2011,
warning them about
the dangers of
xenophobia. But mostly
it’s a catalogue of
slippery personal
histories beginning
with some jaunty
accounts, intercut with
archive footage, of what
it was like to join the
Hitler Youth. One
former Nazi seemingly
pestered his parents for

veterans — some
Waffen-SS, some
Wehrmacht and some
“innocent” bystanders
— to produce this
fascinating document
of denial and evasion.
There are some
moments of awareness
among the aged
interview subjects.
One, a former SS
officer called Hans
Werk, is filmed choking
back tears as he
