B

ritain seems to have been
turned upside down.
Winters in the north tend
to be colder and the south
somewhat milder but this
month that pattern has flipped the
other way. Scotland has seen some
surprisingly mild days with England
left in the cold, especially at night.
On Friday Benson in Oxfordshire
sank to a low of minus 7.9C while
Aboyne in Aberdeenshire reached
a high of 11.9C. Average
temperatures for Scotland reflect a
similar pattern, 2.6C above normal at
Strathallan in Perth and Kinross and
Tiree in the Inner Hebrides, while
Benson has been 0.2C below average.
Another curious thing is how little
rain has fallen across most of the
country. So far there has only been
about half the expected rainfall for
the UK and some places have been
exceptionally dry — Boulmer in
Northumberland has had just 19 per
cent of its usual January rainfall.
Many rivers are running below their
normal levels for the time of year,
although most reservoirs are well
stocked and groundwater levels are
where they should be in mid-winter.
Even though wet winter weather
can make life dreary, these rains are
crucial for restocking water supplies
for the next several months. Despite
Britain’s reputation for wet weather,
rainfall and water supplies can be
precarious, especially in southern
England and East Anglia. A case in
point is London, which gets less
rainfall each year than Rome,
Istanbul or Sydney. The capital
relies on good supplies of water
stored naturally in chalk rocks deep
underground that need recharging
with winter rainfall.
For much of this January, dry and
calm conditions have dominated the
UK from persistent high pressure.
But today low pressure and rains
start to encroach into Scotland,
ushering in windier, wetter
conditions. High pressure will try to
return but will face a battle with
low-pressure systems, and that will
tend to bring wetter, windy and
colder weather towards the north
and drier and calmer weather
towards the south — a familiar
winter picture.
