FEWstandpeopleanythinghaveabouteverit,studiedthoughgeologythey;mayandstillbeglibfewerinunder-telling
aboutthestrangemonstersthatlivedinthevariousgeological
"ages." Butinreality,geologyisthegrandestofallthenatural
sciences,andisfarmoreimportantthananyoftheothersinits

Butwhyisitthatmoderngeologicaldiscoveriesaresooutof
jointwiththestandardgeologicaltheories? Whyisitthatthe
theoreticalpartofthescienceofgeologyhasneverbeenrevised
innearlyahundredyears? Whyisitthatwhengreatareas,
coveringhundredsofsquaremiles,arefoundwiththerocksall
inthe"wrong"order,—thatis,withthe"older"rocksabove,and
the"younger"rocksunderneath,—andwithnophysicalsignsof
disturbanceanywheretobeseen,lookingexactlyasiftheywere
depositedinthisorder—whyisitthatagreatEnglishgeologist
complainsthatiftheserocks"hadbeenplannedforthepurpose
ofdeception,theycouldnothavebeenmoreskillfullydevised,"
butinsteadofrevisinghisout-of-datetheoriestofitthesenew
facts,thisillustriousscientistdeclaresthatheoughtto"beex-
cusedifhebeginstowonderwhetherhehimselfisnotreally
standingonhishead"?
Woulditnotbemorescientifictorevisetheout-of-datetheo-
riesofthescience,thantosupposethatnaturehashereworked
a"frame-up"todeceiveus?
