water.Whenherecoveredhimselfhereturnedtotheverandaand
bowedtothemaster,whoretorted,"Oyoudenizenofthedark
cavern!"
Anotherday,thinkingthatthemzisterfailedtoreallyappreci-
atethedepthsofhisknowledgeofZen,Hakuindesiredtohave
asettlementwithhimanyhow. WTienthetimecameHakuin
enteredthemzister'sroomand exhaustedallhis ingenuityin
contestwithhim,makinguphismindthistimenottogiveupaninchofground.Themasterwasfurious,andfinallytakinghold
ofHakuingavehimseveralslapsandpushedhimofftheporch.Hefellseveralfeettothefootofastonewall,whereheremained
forawhilealmostsenseless.Themasterlookeddownathimand
laughedheartily; this brought Hakuinbacktoconsciousness,andwhenhecamebacktothemasterhewasallinperspiration.
Themaster,however,didnotreleasehimyetbutstigmatized
himasbefore,"Oyoudenizenofthedarkcavern!"
Hakuingrewdesperateandthoughtofleavingtheoldmasteraltogether,whenonedayashewasgoingaboutbegginginthe
villageacertainaccidentsuddenlyopenedhiseyetothetruthof
Zen,whichhadhithertobeencompletelyhiddenfromhim.Hisjoyknewnoboundsandhecamebacktothemasterinamost
exaltedstateofmind.Beforehecouldenterthefrontgate,the
masterrecognized thatsomething hadhappened tohimandbeckonedtohimsaying: "Whatgoodnewshaveyoubrought
hometoday?Comerightin,bequick,quick!"Hakuinthentold
himallaboutwhathehadgonethroughduringtheday.The
mastertenderlystrokedhimonthebackandsaid,"Youhaveit
now;youhaveitatlast!"Afterthisthemasternevercalledhim
names.SuchwasthetrainingthefatherofmodemJapaneseZenhad
togothrough.Howterriblyhardhisoldmaster,Shoju,waswhen
hepushedHakuinoverthestonewall!Buthowmotherlyhewas
whenhisdisciple,aftersomuchill-treatment,finallycameout
triumphantly!Indeed,thereisnothinglukewarminZen;ifitis
lukewarm, itisnotZen. Itexpectsone topenetrateintothe
