A Confucianscholar writes,"They seekthetruth toofar

awayfromthemselves,whileitisrightnearthem."Thesame

thingmaybesaidofZen.Welookforitssecretswheretheyare

mostunlikelytobefound, thatis, inverbalabstractionsand


metaphysicalsubdeties,whereasthetruthofZenreallyliesin

theconcretethingsofourdailylife.Amonkaskedthemaster

"ItissometimesinceIcametoyoutobeinstructedintheholy

path ofthe Buddha, butyouhave never givenme even an

WhenZenissaidtobeillogicalandirrational,timidreaders

arcfrightenedandmayvsishtohavenothingtodowithit,but

IamconfidentthatthepresentchapterdevotedtopracticalZen

businessZenis,andatthesametimetoemphasizethepractical
