pointofviewoflookingatthingsisthis?


UnderDaiye(Ta-hui),^thegreatZenmasteroftheSung

dynasty,therewasamonknamedDoken(Tao-ch'ien),whohad

spent manyyearsin thestudyofZen, butwho had notas

yetuncovereditssecrets,iftherewereany.Hewasquitedis-

couragedwhenhewassenton anerrandtoa distantcity.A

triprequiringhalfayeartofinishwouldbeahindrancerather
thanahelptohisstudy.Sogen(Tsung-yuan),oneofhisfellow-
students,wasmostsympatheticandsaid,"Iwillaccompanyyou

onthistripanddoallIcanforyou;thereisnoreasonwhyyou

carmot go on with yourmeditation even while travelling."

OneeveningDokendespairinglyimploredhisfriendtoassist

himinthesolutionofthemysteryoflife.Thefriendsaid,"Iam

willingto helpyou ineveryway Ican, but therearesome

thingsinwhichIcannotbeofanyhelptoyou;theseyoumust

lookafterforyourself."Doken expressed thedesireto know

whatthesethingswere. Saidhisfriend: "Forinstance, when

youarehungryorthirsty,myeatingoffoodordrinkingwillnot

fillyourstomach; youmusteatanddrinkforyourselfWhen

youwanttorespondtothecallsofnatureyoumusttakecare

ofyourself,forIcannotbeofanyusetoyou.Andthenitwill

benobodyelsebutyourselfthatwillcarryyourbodyzilongthis
highway."Thisfi4endlycounselatonceopenedthemindofthe

truth-seekingmonk,whowassotransportedwithhisdiscovery

thathedidnotknowhowtoexpresshisjoy.Sogensaidthathis

workwasnowdoneandthathisfiirthercompanionshipwould

havenomeaning afterthis;soheleftDokentocontinuehis
journeyallbyhimself.AfterahalfyearDokenreturnedtohis


ownmonastery.Daiye,onhiswaydownthemountains,hap-

penedtomeetDokenandatoncemadethefollowingremark,
