UnderDaiye(Ta-hui),^thegreatZenmasteroftheSung
dynasty,therewasamonknamedDoken(Tao-ch'ien),whohad

couragedwhenhewassenton anerrandtoa distantcity.A
triprequiringhalfayeartofinishwouldbeahindrancerather
thanahelptohisstudy.Sogen(Tsung-yuan),oneofhisfellow-
students,wasmostsympatheticandsaid,"IwillaccompanyyouonthistripanddoallIcanforyou;thereisnoreasonwhyyou
carmot go on with yourmeditation even while travelling."OneeveningDokendespairinglyimploredhisfriendtoassist
himinthesolutionofthemysteryoflife.Thefriendsaid,"Iam
willingto helpyou ineveryway Ican, but therearesome
