98 Achieving pH Balance to Treat Specific Ailments
that his doctor predicted that in a few months they would wear
out like the others had. At that point he would have to go on
dialysis.
I suggested that for the next three months he tax his kidneys
as little as possible. I prescribed nothing but juices made from
organic vegetables, starting out with bland vegetables such as
zucchinis and lettuce, a week later adding celery and shortly after
one medium-sized organic potato for the protein and
carbohydrates he needed to sustain him for the three months he
was on a liquid diet. Because he was a borderline diabetic, he
couldn’t have carrot juice. Vegetables with a bitter taste are
considered by traditional cultures to be effective in lowering blood
sugar. Malcolm juiced bitter melon that he bought at a market in
Chinatown. To satisfy the body’s fat and oil requirements he took
two pats of organic butter along with some organic olive oil, once
a day the fi rst week and twice a day thereafter. Because I’ve had
such success in bringing failed kidneys back to life with 1,600 units
of vitamin E a day, I suggested that Malcolm begin taking this two
weeks after he started juicing. He also began to take devil’s claw,
an herb that reduces blood pressure, at the same time. As the
herb took effect, his doctor gradually took him off diarvan, his
blood pressure medication. This was two years ago, and Malcolm’s
remaining nephrons are still functioning.
Preventing the Recurrence of Kidney Stones
The effect of a heavy meat diet on the formation of kidney stones is
made clear in an experiment described in an article in the Journal of
Urology.^2 Because of increasing contact with the West since World War
II, the Japanese have been eating more meat and fewer vegetables. To
fi nd out whether this change in diet was responsible for tripling the
rate of kidney stones among the Japanese, researchers at Kinki Univer-
sity in Osaka conducted a study. They divided 370 men into two groups
and put each on a different diet. One group was on a low-meat, high-
vegetable diet, and the other simply increased their intake of fl uids. It
turned out that the men on a diet of mostly vegetables and little meat
