Spiegelman is now implanting mice with brown fat cells in the hope
they will slim the mice down. He won’t say how the experiment is
going, but he does say that so far the results are encouraging. He
hopes to do the same with humans. Because brown fat cells induce the
body’s white fat cells to break down into fatty acids and then absorbs
them, he believes that brown cells inserted in humans will melt off the
pounds.

Additional Factors to Consider on a Weight-Loss Diet
What can be done about food addictions? Eating one medium-sized,
sliced-up raw potato a day can reduce the craving for food. But there
are other alternatives. Cheryl chose one of them. She gave up all the
foods she was addicted to at once to see if there were any she could do
without. Whereas her craving for pizza and hero sandwiches persisted,
she didn’t miss sodas. In place of soda, she drinks carbonated water.
One hard-and-fast rule all dieters should follow is no junk food
before breakfast. A junk-food snack fi rst thing in the morning ferments
and putrefi es in the stomach. Any healthy food eaten afterward, exposed
to the bacteria in the putrefying and fermenting junk-food molecules,
is also broken down into toxic waste by these bacteria.
The most critical factor in any weight-loss program is the effi cient
digestion of foods. Complete digestion means fewer acidic wastes. This
has at least three advantages:


  • Appetite cravings are reduced (toxic acidic food residues create
    abnormal hunger pangs).

  • Fewer acidic wastes means less fat sticks to the ribs.

  • Reduction in toxic acidic wastes makes for a more alkaline
    environment in the body. This in turn increases the production of
    food-digesting enzymes.


Keep in mind that the more enzymes that break down food molecules
in the gastrointestinal tract, the less food remains undigested and the
better the chances to attain the ultimate in effi cient digestion and
consequent weight loss: oxidation (burning) of 97 percent of the food
you eat.
