THE OVERALL PURPOSE OF A SELECTION
INTERVIEW
This chapter is about selection interviews which provide the
information required to assess candidates against a person speci-
fication. A selection interview should provide you with the
answers to three fundamental questions:
- Can the individual do the job? Is the person capable of doing
the work to the standard required? - Will the individual do the job? Is the person well motivated?
- How is the individual likely to fit into the team? Will I be able
to work well with this person?
THE NATURE OF A SELECTION INTERVIEW
A selection interview should take the form of a conversation
with a purpose. It is a conversation because candidates should be
given the opportunity to talk freely about themselves and their
