Glide
A sound that is like a vowel, but shorter. The glides in English are /y/ and /w/. They
can be used:
- As consonants, as in yes /yɛs/, beyond /biyɑnd/, well /wɛl/, or away /əwey/.
- As the last part of a glided vowel or a diphthong, as in see /siy/, say /sey/, boy /
boy/, by /bay/, too /tuw/, toe /tow/, or cow /caw/.
Glides are also called semivowels, or “half-vowels.”
Glide is one of the manners of articulation.
