Heart, peak, or nucleus of a syllable
The central part of a syllable. It’s usually a vowel, but it could also be a syllabic
consonant. For example, in the one-syllable word cat, the heart of the syllable is the
vowel /æ/. In the second syllable of the word buttom, the heart can be a syllabic
consonant /n̩/.
