Main stress
One syllable in every polysyllabic word is pronounced with more emphasis than the
others. This syllable has the main stress. It can be longer, higher, louder, and clearer
than the other syllables. Main stress is also called primary stress.
For example, the word conˌgratuˈlations has !ve syllables, with the primary stress on
the fourth syllable
