Morphology

The study of the forms of words and the di"erent parts that are put together to make
words. (In English, these are pre!xes, su#xes, and word roots.) Morphology includes:

  • In$ectional morphology: Adding grammatical endings to words to make a
    di"erent form of the same word. (For example, work + ing = working, class + es
    = classes.)

  • Derivational morphology: Putting word parts together (roots, pre!xes, su#xes) to
    make new words. (For example, work + er = worker, un + happy = unhappy,
    class + room = classroom.)
