Primary stress
One syllable in every polysyllabic word is pronounced with more emphasis than the
others. This syllable has the primary stress. It can be longer, higher, louder, and
clearer than the other syllables. Primary stress is also called main stress.
For example, the word congratuˈlations has !ve syllables, with the primary stress on
the fourth syllable
