Tongue position

A description of where the highest, tensest, or most active part of the tongue is when
we pronounce a vowel sound. We describe:

  • Vertical position: High, mid, or low

  • Horizontal position: Front, central, or back

For example, here is a diagram of the tongue position for the vowel /iy/, a high front
vowel.
