Check the
fine-tuning
DSLR users may
sometimes find that a
lens focuses a little in
front of or behind their
intended target when they
compose images in the
viewfinder. This can often
be corrected using the AF
Fine Tuning or Adjustment
feature found on more
advanced DSLRs. It
should not be an issue for
mirrorless cameras.

Find the
battery
Buyers like to see the
original battery with a
camera so don’t forget
to supply that, along
with any spares you
may have if your next
camera can’t use
them. Naturally, the
battery charger and
mains cable should
come with the camera
unless otherwise
stated. Take a look
inside the camera’s
battery compartment
to make sure that
there’s no sign of
corrosion or leakage.

Lens checks
The most obvious thing to check with a lens is that the elements are clean and
free from dust, scratches or fungus. After any dust has been cleaned off and
with the lens removed from the camera, take a good look at the elements. It’s
also important to check that any rings move smoothly with no sticky or gritty
sections. Equally, they shouldn’t be too slack and rotate too readily. Then with
the lens mounted on a camera, check that the aperture adjusts correctly and
that you are able to select every value. Also, check that it focuses correctly in
manual focus and (when available) autofocus mode.

Check and clean the sensor
Nobody wants to see dust spots on the first
images they take with a new (to them) camera, so
check the sensor and if necessary give it a clean
to ensure it’s spotless before you sell it. If you’re
not confident or you don’t have the right cleaning
equipment, again you may be better off selling
your kit to a dealer such as Park Cameras as they
check and clean the sensor in all second-hand
cameras that come through their doors.

Check the
shutter
It’s always worth
taking a few test
shots to check that
the shutter is working
correctly. Fire off a
shot at every
selectable shutter
speed and check
that the exposure
adjusts accordingly.
Also, listen out for
any unusual sounds
and make sure that
none of the blades
are sticking.

Ask about a warranty
A reputable dealer will give second-hand kit a
thorough check upon receiving it, and a
professional clean before sending it to the new
owner. They also usually offer a warranty on most
items that they sell so if it develops any faults
during the first few months, you’re covered.
