MODIFIED BITUMEN MEMBRANE ROOFING (SBS)

Modified Bitumen Membrane Roofing (SBS)

  1. Requirements


a. Roof system is classified by Underwriters Laboratories to meet the
requirements of Class "A" Fire Resistance.

b. Roofing system is classified by Factory Mutual to meet the requirements of
FRMRC Windstorm Resistance Classification 1-90 minimum.


  1. Materials and Properties


a. Membrane shall be a reinforced styrene-butadiene - styrene polymer meeting
the minimum requirements of CGSB 37-GP-56M.

b. Membrane sheet shall be granulated with white mineral aggregate. Granule
embedment loss shall be less than two grams per square foot.

c. Base ply shall be a modified asphalt base sheet and compatible with the
surface membrane sheet.

B. Related Materials



  1. Asphalt primer: Shall meet requirements of ASTM D 41. Primer shall be as
    recommended by the membrane manufacturer.

  2. Flashing membrane: Shall be modified bituminous material as recommended and
    furnished by the membrane manufacturer.

  3. Roof insulation: Reference Section 07220 - Roof and Deck Insulation for
    requirements.

  4. Roof Insulation Fasteners: Reference Section 07220 - Roof and Deck Insulation for
    requirements.

  5. Roof cement: Shall meet requirements of ASTM D 4586 (asbestos-free) and be
    recommended by the membrane manufacturer.

  6. Loose roofing granules: Shall meet requirements of ASTM D 451 and be
    recommended by the membrane manufacturer. Color shall match color of granulated
    membrane sheet. Size shall match size of granules on the membrane.

  7. Nails and Fasteners: Non-ferrous metal or galvanized steel, except that hard copper
    nails shall be used with copper; aluminum or stainless steel nails shall be used with
    aluminum; and stainless steel nails shall be used with stainless steel. Fasteners shall
    be self-clinching type or penetrating type as recommended by the manufacturer of the
    deck material. Nails and fasteners shall be flush-driven through flat metal discs of not
    less than 1-inch diameter. Metal discs may be omitted when one-piece composite
    nails or fasteners with heads not less than 1-inch diameter are used.
