Solubility describes the extent to which one substance will dissolve in another. We are going to study factors that
affect the solubility of solids, liquids, and gases in various liquid solvents, particularly water. In the opening image,
we see crystals forming in a solution, which can occur when the solubility of a given solute-solvent pairing is
exceeded. Our understanding of intermolecular forces will help us to explain the extent to which substances are
soluble in water by looking at interactions on the molecular level.
