MATERIALS – What if we told you that it’s
possible to eliminate fossil fuels, processed
foods and polymers from our lives? Conven-
tional methods of production and consump-
tion are damaging our existence, environmen-
tally, financially and socially. We dig up and
burn enormous amounts of fossil fuels, we
chuck out plastic without a thought, and we
produce food that contributes to deforesta-
tion and greenhouse gases before ending up
as food waste. Questioning, innovating, and
offering solutions to these crucial problems
are designers who are focused on a circular,
bio-based economy. Eric Klarenbeek and
Maartje Dros of Studio Klarenbeek & Dros
use microalgae to tackle production waste.
The studio drew on its history of material
studies – from potato starch to cocoa-beanshells – in its collaboration with Atelier Luma.
The result is an elegant range of 3D-printed
bowls and vases based on the conversion of
living algae that the designers dry and use to
make bioplastic. – LG
