GOOD DESIGN AWARD:
JURY’S CHOICE
EXHIBITION
One of Moment’s strong suits is an abil-
ity to switch smoothly from the design
of spaces or websites, for example, to
curatorial projects. Tasked with curating
an exhibition of 71 products selected by
as many jurors for Japan’s Good Design
Award event, Moment made the bold move
to eliminate objects completely. Instead,
the designers displayed images of the 71
judges, each an authority in his or her
specific field.
‘Some jurors selected a car,’ says
Watabe, ‘making it virtually impossible
to show all 71 selected pieces in the same
space. We decided to present portraits of the
people behind the selections, all facing the
same direction.’ Stepping into the gallery and
feeling the gaze of 142 eyes upon them, visi-
tors sensed that they, too, were on display.
Together with the scenography,
Moment took responsibility for all visual
communication, from posters and graphics
to website design. ‘Having all these capa-
bilities in-house makes it easier to say yes
or no to ideas straightaway,’ says Hirawata.
It’s an advantage that an increasing number
of interior-design firms have adopted, and
one that Moment is now known for. ‘We’ve
been asked to produce an exhibition for
Issey Miyake as well.’ »

The full-service scheme provided for such
projects as the Jury’s Choice Exhibition,
part of Japan’s Good Design Award 2014,
has become a signature of the studio.
