shot of Corfe Castle has been

on my bucket list for a while

and when i finally managed to

capture the castle standing in

the mist, it surpassed all my

expectations. i like the contrast

of the dark castle walls against

the pale mist swirling through

the ruins, and thought this

would work really well in the

monochromatic medium.’

If we asked 100 photographers

what their biggest challenges

were, ‘getting the right

exposure’ would probably not

be the top response. Surely

most modern cameras have nailed this now.

Or have they? Obvious under or overexposure

may be relatively rare these days, but there is

no such thing as ‘correct’ exposure – it’s all

subjective. The camera’s interpretation may be

acceptable, but is it optimal? Would overriding

the camera produce a more pleasing result?

How do you keep highlight and shadow detail?

Do histograms still have a purpose? These are

some of the questions we answer in this week’s

big feature. We also look at how to breathe new

life into old negatives, shine a light on two very

different cameras, and tell the stories behind

two very different photographs.
