    Rutaceae); sweet, tangy; used as astringent for
    oily skin, and in drinks and desserts; not for use

  • Tarragon: citrus; Artemisia dracunculus(family,
    Asteraceae [Compositae]); energizing; said to
    relieve aches, pains, and menstrual discomfort
    and improve mental alertness; also used as

    basil, bergamot, chamomile, clary sage,

  • Tea tree: camphoraceous; Melaleuca alternifolia,
    M. linariifolia, M. uncintata (family, Myrtaceae);
    energizing; strong antiseptic, antifungal, and
    antiviral; for acne, cold sores, foot odor, athlete’s
    foot, warts, and burns; also used as cleaning
    agent and for soothing skin of dogs with flea
    allergy dermatitis; may irritate skin; from leaves
    and stems, Australia; production method: steam
    distillation; blends well with lavandin, lavender,
    clary sage, rosemary, cananga, geranium, marjo-
    ram, clove, nutmeg

  • Thyme (sweet): spicy; Thymus vulgaris(family,
    Lamiaceae [Labiatae]); ancient medicinal and
    culinary herb; for use as vaporized household
    disinfectant, deodorant, antiseptic; believed also
    to ward off rodents and get rid of fleas; not for
    use by pregnant women or individuals with
    hypertension; may irritate skin; from flowering

    tion; blends well with bergamot, lemon, rose-
    mary, lavender, lavandin, marjoram

  • Vanilla absolute: balsamic; Vanilla plantifolia;
    (family, Vanilla); from seeds, Madagascar; pro-
    duction method: solvent extraction; emollient,
    aphrodisiac; aroma type: balsamic; blends well
    with sandalwood, vetiver

    • Vetivert: woodsy; Vetivera zizanoides, Andropogon
      muricatus (family, Poaceae [Gramineae]); also
      known as vetiver; relaxing, grounding, sensual,
      earthy, smoky; helps reduce blood pressure;
      from roots, Haiti; production method: steam dis-
      tillation; blends with lavender, sandalwood, and
      jasmine

    • Violet leaves: herbaceous; Viola odorata; calming
      (family, Violaceae); used as soothing agent, skin
      conditioner; from leaves, France and Egypt; pro-
      duction method: solvent extraction; blends well
      with clary sage, basil

    • Wintergreen: minty; Gaultheria procumbens (fam-

      [Compositae]); sedative properties; used for
      chest infections, digestive problems, nervous

    • Ylang Ylang: floral; Cananga odorata (family,
      Annonaceae); often called the “flower of flow-
      ers” and often “the poor person’s jasmine”;
      sweet; long used for sensual, soothing proper-
      ties, as perfume, skin care, and hair rinse; from
      flowers, Indonesia; production method: solvent
      extraction; blends well with bergamot, lavender,
      lemon, narcissus, neroli, palmarosa, sandal-
      wood, vetiver

    • Zanthoxylum: Zanthoxylum alatum, Z. americum,
      Z. rhesta (family, Rutaceae); also known as
      prickly ash; from berries of the native North
      American tree; used in stress and nervous ten-
      sion reduction and for restful sleep
