ties of Pennsylvania.Rothkopfwas atrustee

Rothkopflovedspendingtimewith his family
and friends,and enjoyedlife in Washington

he left homefor LafayetteCollegein Easton,
PA,anexperiencethat foreverchangedhis
life.Hewent on to HarvardLawSchool,
wherehemademanylifelongfriendships.In
1956,he met BarbaraSarnoff,and findingher
to be awillingsailingpartner,they embarked
on along and happylife together.
Rothkopfbeganhis careerin Washington,DC
as alawyerat the Securities&Exchange
Commissionandthe U.S. Departmentof
Treasury.Hethen joinedthe law firm Hogan
&Hartson,wherehespecializedintax,regu-
latory,and legislativerepresentationof U.S.
and foreignclients.After along and success-
ful legalcareer,in1992 he wasappointed
deputysecretaryof the U.S. Department
ofTransportationbyPresidentGeorgeH.W.
Bushand confirmedby the Senate.Before
that,he servedas general counselof the
department,alsoaSenate-confirmedposi-
tion.
In July 1993,Rothkopfwas appointedpres-
identof LafayetteCollege,his almamater.
He and his wife lovedtheir12 yearsat the

From therehe developedapassionfor real
estate,eitherbuildingand sellingor owning
several rentalproperties.When he wasn’t
workingyouwouldfindhimonthefootball
field coaching.That was his true passionso
in the mid 1960’shestartedthe Northern
Virginiafootballcluband namedhis team
the panthers.Over the yearshe coached
countlessamountsof youngmenand men-
toredthemto be betterindividuals,sons,and
brothers.Many of whomstill keptin touch
withhim all the way to the day he passed.
By 1990he had amassedover 200 wins(and
only17 losses)makinghim the winningest
littleleaguefootballcoachin the areaat
the time.His finalcoachingpositionwas
the 1992BishopO’Connellfreshmanfootball
teamand recordedan undefeatedseason.
In 1996Bill retiredto Palmyra, VA areawith
his wife Kathyand his youngestson but he
neverdid reallyretire.Heworkedall kindsof
little jobs fromdoingsomeplumbing,aclerk
at aconveniencestoreand evenashuttle
driverat acar dealership.The amountof
people’slives that he touchedover the years
is infinite.Hewould walkin aroomand light
it up withhis stories,jokes,and wisdom.

SaudiArabia,afterwhichhe retiredinSep-
tember 1989.Uponretirement,he contin-
ued to workpart-timefor the StateDepart-

Brookswaskind,generous,and thoughtful
withawonderfulself-deprecatingsenseof
humor.Hewas unfailinglypoliteto all he
