But whileyou need to tailor, it’s best to start out with
a “master”you can edit accordingto the job you’re
applyingfor. And, whileyou’llbe revisingyour resume
to workwith an ATS, everyresumeshouldinclude
specificthings. High level,this is what shouldbe on
your resume:Your nameand contactinformation;a
summary;soft and hard (technical)skills;workhistory;
and education.
Nameandcontactinformation
Includeyour first and last name, phonenumber, a
professionalemailaddress(preferably linked), links
to socialmediasuch as LinkedIn,and a link to your
website/portfolio if you have one. Includeyour city, but
your physicaladdressis no longernecessary—your
potentialemployer won’tbe reachingout by letter.
Summary
A summaryservesto spotlight your relevant professional
experienceandtheexpertisewhichmakesyouuniquely
qualifiedfor the positionyou’re seeking.This is the only
paragraphthatshouldbeinyourresume,anditshould
be a shortone—five sentencesat the absolutemost.
Sincewe’re creatinga master, not tailoringat this
point,thinkaboutkeywordsfor your industry. Are
you a leader?Think aboutactionwords like: manage,
supervise, direct,delegate, guide, coordinate, inspire
and influence.
Are you a teamplayer? Don’tuse “teamplayer,”
instead,thinkabout wordslike: collaborate, partner,
participate, contribute, developrelationships.
Are you workingin a creativeenvironment?Consider
verbslike: introduce, solve, create, implement,design,
launchand innovate.
Buildyour summaryaroundthe keywordsyou’ve
createdfor your industry. These can be swappedout
whenyou tailorfor specificjob listings, but you’re
buildinga strongfoundation.And keep your lists! You’ll
be usingthosekeywordsin almosteveryotherpart of
your resume.
Softandhard (technical)skills
Let’s start by lookingat the key differencesbetween
soft and hard skills. A soft skill relatesto emotional
intelligenceor innateability, whilea hard skill typically
involvestechnicalknowledge whichhas beenlearned.
With that in mind, rememberthose lists you’vebeen
workingon? They’re a greatway of bakingsoft skills
into your resume, but here you can highlighta bunch
of them,and, basedon the job listing,keep what’s
mostrelevant.
Now, on to thosehard skills. List all of themthat you
have. Again,you may be editingwhenyou tailor, but
this is whereyou put MS Office, QuickBooks, Photoshop
and Illustrator, programmingcapabilities, content
managementsystems, socialmedia,and any other
industry-specific technicalskill.
Work history
Listyourjobs,puttingyourcurrentrolefirstandworking
your way down.You can includeeverything in this
resumeif you’d like, but we don’ttypicallygo olderthan
10-15years. It’s very likely your responsibilitieswill be
repetitiveor not applicableto the typesof opportunities
you’re lookingfor now.
Includethe name and locationof the company, your
job title, and the datesyou worked there. Now list
your responsibilities and accomplishments. Here’s
anotheropportunityto use that keywordlist, but let’s
incorporate a new exercise. Find a way to quantifythe
resultsyou had in each position.Can you showvolume,
responsibility, revenue, etc. in numbers? If you can, do it.
Somefood for thoughtas you workon the highlights
of your currentrole:A largenumberof companies
are creatinghybrid (bothonsiteand remote)models
for workor going fully remotefor certain positions. If
you’veworked partiallyor entirelyremotesince2020,
take a look at whatyou’veaccomplishedand highlight
whatyou’vedone. It may seemnormalto you at this
point,but if you’vebeenable to managea team,hire
or train successfullyin a remotesetting,highlightthose
wins. As companies moveto thesenew styles, they’ll
needflexibleteamswho can make nontraditionalwork
modelsfunctionwell.
Education
Justasinworkhistory,fillineducationinreverse
chronologicalorder(mostrecentfirst), and, if you’ve
graduatedcollege, don’tincludehigh school.Include
the nameand locationof your school,your majorand
any academichonors. You don’tneedto includeyour
graduationyear.
Specialmentionof specialcertifications
Devotingtime to earninga specialcertificationshows
your investmentin your chosenfield.List the name
of the certification, the organizationand whenyou
earnedit.
Finally, whileyour tailoredresume can certainlyinclude
moreinformation, such as awards and achievements,
professionalmemberships, and even volunteer
communitywork,everyresumeneedsto includethe
five essentialslistedabove. In doingso, you’llgreatly
improvethe chances of you resumebeingseen by a
hiringmanager, and in turn, the potentialfor getting
the job.
