AhlulBayt.In 234 A.H.,MutawakkilorderedImam‘Alian-Naqi(a.s.)to
be brought from Medina to Samarra where he wasplaced in a house
nexttothecaliph’sgarrison.TheImamlivedunderconstantsurveillance
untilMutawakkilwasmurdered byhisowntroopsattheinstigationof
his own son, Muntasir.
Muntasirbin Mutawakkilreversedthe policiesof hisfather towards
theAhlulBayt(a.s.);hewaskindandgeneroustothem;hereturnedthe
propertyofFadaktothedescendantsofImamsHasanandHusayn(a.s.).
Unfortunatelyhiscaliphatedidnotlastformorethansixmonthswhen
he died in 248 A.H.
Musta‘incametopowerafterMuntasirandcontinuedtheoppressive
policies of his ancestors. But soon his own Turkish troops rebelled
againsthimandpledgedallegiance toMu‘tazz binMutawakkil whom
they rescued from prison. Finally, Musta‘in was killed
andMu‘tazzbecome the caliph.
ItwasduringthereignofMu‘tazzbinMutawakkilthatImam‘Alian-
Naqi was martyred by poisoning.
