The panther undoubtedly cuts a
steely figure with its reputation for
stealth, cunning and physical
prowess and the big cat also makes
a bold statement as the focus for
these sterling silver cufflinks from
Paris-based luxury jeweller Cartier.
The panther has a long association
with Cartier and the roots of this
love affair were born from jewellery
designer Jeanne Toussaint, who was
appointed Cartier’s head of artistic
design in 1933; the first woman to
hold such a high office in the
jewellery business. Toussaint adored
exotic animals, in particular the
panther, and she reportedly had an
apartment full of panther fur and
was often seen flouncing around
Paris in a panther fur coat; Louis
Cartier adored her, giving her the
nickname ‘Ma petite panthère’. These
cufflinks reflect Toussaint’s designs
that were influenced by Art Deco
and based on three-dimensional
sculptural pieces set with diamonds,
onyx and emeralds. They are made
from Cartier palladium-plated
sterling silver with black and green
lacquer and whale-back fastening;
they measure in at 1.6cm in length
and 1.2cm wide. Rest assured also
that no panthers were harmed in the
making of these glorious cufflinks.
