Numbers, time, and

measures

In this unit, you will learn some nouns and noun phrases that are necessary to
communicate in very practical ways. It is important to understand and know
numbers, dates, and time in everyday situations such as shopping, banking, or
simply ordering tickets for the theater.

Les nombres (Numbers)

Numbers are essential vocabulary words in every aspect of life. Th ey appear in
addresses, prices, telephone numbers, and even simple descriptions.

Les nombres cardinaux (Cardinal numbers)

French cardinal numbers are at the same time numerical adjectives (only un var-
ies in the feminine form) and masculine nouns.
In the following sentence, un is a numerical adjective agreeing with the mas-
culine noun chien, and une is a numerical adjective agreeing with the feminine
noun chatte.

Je veux seulement un chien et une chatte. I want only one dog and one cat.

In the following sentences, the numbers un, deux, and trois are used as
nouns.

Le un gagne, le deux perd. Number one wins, number two
loses.
Le trois est mon nombre préféré. Th ree is my favorite number.

Th e only numbers that cannot be preceded by an article such as le or un are
cent and mille.

Cent ne vaut rien dans ce jeu. One hundred is not worth
anything in this game.

Here are some numbers between zero and one billion.

zéro 0
un 1
deux 2
trois 3
quatre 4
cinq 5
six 6
sept 7
