Communicating, relating,
and interacting
In this unit you will learn verbs that pertain to verbal and written communication
as well as relationships. You will also become familiar with verbs that serve to de-
scribe what people do routinely for themselves as well as what they do for and
against other people.
Communiquer (Communicating)
Th ere are many forms of communication. We communicate information, feel-
ings, opinions, advice, and orders on a regular basis.
Prendre un parti (Taking a position)
It is important to express one’s point of view and take a stand.

avouer to confess
persuader to persuade
prendre le parti to take sides
refuser to refuse
rejeter to reject
On l’a persuadé d’accepter le travail. Th ey persuaded him to take the
job.

J’espère qu’il ne rejettera pas l’off re. I hope he will not reject the off er.
Conseiller (Advising)
Giving advice or instructions is another form of communication.
