Let me start this chapter with a question: What does it take to become
a leader in a constantly changing world? To explain my views, I would
like to write about the concept and insights of a new form of leadership
that I think has developed in recent years: leadership under uncertainty.
This is happening in many countries, but particularly in those where
both the economy and the rules of the game are changing constantly.
This is what we have in many developing countries and it adds turbu-
lence to all of our actions and decisions. It also creates a sense of ur-
gency that is not present in other regions: here you need to decide faster,
with probably less information.


We think we all know about change, but are we really sure we know
what it means if we live it almost daily? We hear that we live in chang-
ing times, and it has really been a changing world in recent decades. We
have seen many examples since the 1960s and 1970s: a dramatic trans-
formation in technology, such as the changes in computers, the creation
of tablets and smartphones, improvements in medical equipment, or the
creation of the Internet and Social Media, all of which give us greater
mobility. These are examples that have impacted us in ways that will
continue to change our present and our future, so just imagine where
technological innovations will take us from here.
