Unit 2HO 2-4(continued)Certainly,managers of small businesses wishto realize andcapitalize on the opportunitiesand benefits ofsize and to protect themselves fromthe critical influence of rapidlymaterializing environmentalthreats and obstacles. Therefore,a carefuland accuratedetermination ofkey environmental influencesand changesis essential. A thoroughenvironmentalanalysiscreates the differencebetween a proactiveand reactivebusiness.THE PROACTIVE
BUSINESSOne of the themesnoted and builtupon throughout this bookis that planningis a proactive activity. Simplystated, a proactivebusinesslooks to the future, anticipatingand planning forchanges. Onereason for emphasizing environmentalanalysisso strongly is thatit helps the business developa proactiverather than reactive basisor style of management. Theproactive manager sees opportunitieson the horizon andpositionsthebusiness to benefit fromthem. Proactive managersalsorecognizeimpending threats andtake decisive actions to overcome or mitigatethese before disasterstrikes. A reactive business, however, isdriven by day-to-day demands. Here, eventsoccur and the firmresponds. This reactive businessis alwaysundergoing an unanticipatedtrauma. As such, crisismanagement is the evolving styleof operation, and puttingout thelargestfire is the focus of activities. In all likelihood, thebusinessthatfails to continually recognizeand analyze its environmentwill becomethe victim of changesand forces within that environment. The literatureon small business failures is wroughtwith these examples. To recognize theimpact of environmentalanalysis and theimportance of proactivity, consider the case ofMitinetonka, Inc.in Capsule 1-1. One cansee that Taylor's success,at least inpart,is derived from carefullya: .essing his environment, analyzingunmet consumer needs, capitalizing on these opportunities, andconstantly being poisedto modify and changedirection in lightof environmental (competitive)influences.Taylor is proactingand, as such, is succeedingin industriesdominated by giantinternational firms.23ChapterOne EnvironmentalAnalysis166
