88 Chapter 3 Introduction to Engineering Design

When the framing is done, other contractors went on site to do the wiring,
plumbing, roofing, installing equipment. The interior designers began their part
of the project when the interior part of the building is ready such as walls, floors,
and ceilings. When the project is completed to a point where the building inspec-
tor issued the permit of occupancy, the clinic staff could start using the new
clinic. The project manager, site superintendent, and the clinic performed a
walk-through checking everything to make sure they were acceptable. This walk-
through is also called “punch list.” The contractor and project manager took
notes of all the fixes needed and items remained to be finished such as touch up
on paint, cleaning, missing cover plate on light switches, etc. Generally, the
owner would hold back the last 5 to 10% of the payment until he or she is com-
pletely satisfied with the construction.

ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS

Periodically, the project manager and site superintendent also met with the
owner, to report the progress of the construction and to address the owner’s con-
cern. The structural engineer, though not required, was strongly recommended
to visit the site to observe the construction process especially during foundation
construction and framing of the building and to attend the construction meet-
ing periodically during that time. The main purpose of the site observations was
to verify that the structure was constructed as designed and the design was
proper.
Beside visiting construction site, the structural engineer was required to
review all the shop drawings of structural components such as beam sizes and
length, connection details, etc. that were submitted by the fabricators directly or
through the general contractor.
